Wisdom tooth removal at government clinics: official charges
What the Ministry of Health fee schedule lists for surgical tooth removal, the X-rays that may be charged, charges after an extraction, and who handles it in the public system.
Compiled from MOH and MDC sources; not reviewed by a dentist; not medical advice. Government charges shown are from MOH documents and may change — confirm with the clinic.
What the government fee schedule lists
The fee schedule has no separate line for wisdom teeth. The items that apply are tooth extraction and surgical removal.
Removing a tooth that is stuck in the jaw (impacted) or has not come through (unerupted) is surgery. The Fees (Medical) Order classes "surgical removal of impacted teeth and unerupted teeth" as surgery Type C in Jadual I.
Simple vs complex surgical removal: official charges
| Item | Kelas 1 | Kelas 2 | Kelas 3 | Pesakit Luar |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Extraction of a permanent tooth | 25 | 20 | Free | 1 |
| Surgical removal (simple) | 225 | 80 | 15 | 15 |
| Surgical removal of an impacted tooth (complex) | 1,200 | 400 | 50 | 50 |
| Operculectomy | 20 | 15 | Free | 5 |
Amounts in RM. Kelas 1, Kelas 2 and Kelas 3 are hospital ward classes; Pesakit Luar is the outpatient charge, which applies to most clinic visits. These are charges for Malaysian citizens, from MOH Lampiran E (document dated April 2021), and may change. Non-citizens pay different rates. Confirm with the clinic.
The fee schedule does not say which cases count as simple or complex. Ask the dental officer which item applies to you.
X-rays you may be charged for
| X-ray | Kelas 1 | Kelas 2 | Kelas 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intra-oral film | 15 | 5 | 1 |
| OPG (orthopantomogram) | 105 | 30 | 10 |
| CBCT | 350 | 150 | Free |
Amounts in RM. The fee summary lists these radiology charges by ward class only and gives no separate outpatient figure. Ask the clinic what you will pay.
Charges if there is bleeding or a complication after extraction
| Item | Kelas 1 | Kelas 2 | Kelas 3 | Pesakit Luar |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Control of bleeding after extraction | 40 | 30 | Free | 5 |
| Post-extraction complication | 15 | 10 | Free | 5 |
The post-extraction complication charge is not made if the tooth was extracted at the same clinic.
This guide lists charges only. For care after an extraction, follow the instructions of the dentist who treated you. If you need help outside office hours, see dental emergencies after hours.
Who treats it in KKM
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is one of the dental specialties in the Ministry of Health (KKM). A first visit to a government specialist is free on a government referral and RM30 on a private practitioner's referral. Follow-up visits are RM5. More in government dental charges.
Common questions
How much does wisdom tooth removal cost at a government clinic?
For Malaysian citizens as outpatients, Lampiran E lists RM15 for simple surgical removal and RM50 for complex surgical removal of an impacted tooth. A routine extraction of a permanent tooth is RM1. X-rays may be charged separately. The document is dated April 2021 and charges may change.
Is the X-ray included in the charge?
No. X-rays are separate items in the fee schedule. The summary lists them by ward class only, for example RM10 for an OPG in Kelas 3, so ask the clinic about the outpatient charge.
Who does wisdom tooth surgery in the government system?
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a KKM dental specialty. Specialist visits depend on referral: free first visit on a government referral, RM30 on a private referral.
Does this guide tell me whether my wisdom tooth needs to come out?
No. Only a dentist who examines you can decide that. This guide covers official charges only.
