Why registration matters

Dentists in Malaysia are registered with the Malaysian Dental Council (MDC) and must hold an Annual Practising Certificate (APC). The APC is renewed every year through the Ministry of Health's MHPS system, and applications for the next year are due by 1 November.

Treatment by unregistered people carries real risk. The Ministry of Health's SOP on fake braces fitted by illegal practitioners lists infections such as hepatitis and HIV through cross-infection, as well as damage to the teeth and gums. See braces at MOH clinics.

How to search MHPS step by step

  1. Open the Malaysian Healthcare Practitioners System (MHPS), linked under sources below.
  2. Choose Malaysian Dental Council. For a dental therapist, choose the Dental Therapist Board instead.
  3. Choose the state.
  4. Search by registration number, name or premise.

If you cannot find the person, ask the clinic for their registration number, or contact the MDC.

Look for the APC on the wall

Under the Dental Act 2018, section 42, a practitioner's APC must be displayed at each address where they practise. As the APC is renewed every year, check that the one on display is for the current year.

Checking a specialist

The MDC recognises 12 dental specialties (as at 7 April 2025), including orthodontics. If someone presents themselves as a specialist, for example for braces, check their registration on MHPS.

What the "In KKM list" mark on this site means

On this directory, a clinic marked "In KKM list" matched the KKM list of registered private dental clinics dated 30 Sep 2023. It shows that the clinic was on that list. It does not confirm that the clinic or its dentists are registered today, so check MHPS as well.

Common questions

How do I check if a dentist is registered in Malaysia?

Use the MHPS system: choose the Malaysian Dental Council, then the state, then search by registration number, name or premise.

What is an APC?

The Annual Practising Certificate. Every dental practitioner must renew it each year through MHPS, and under section 42 of the Dental Act 2018 it must be displayed at each address where they practise.

Does "In KKM list" on this site mean the clinic is registered now?

No. It means the clinic matched the KKM list of registered private dental clinics dated 30 Sep 2023. Check MHPS for current registration.

Who do I contact with a concern about a dentist?

The Malaysian Dental Council, at mdc@moh.gov.my or 011-58689100 (calls only).
